Roots and Routes : Identity Construction and the Jewish-Christian-Muslim Dialogue

Description

Dialogue participants demonstrate strong motivations for contributing to interreligious dialogue, based on a firm belief that encountering the other generates understanding - the contact thesis. Interreligious dialogue meets with both suspicion and cynicism: the former because it may result in loss of identity, and the latter because important issues may be ignored. The hitherto unanswered question is how Jewish-Christian-Muslim dialogue affects the identities of its participants. In this study Rachel Reedijk analyses identity construction in an interreligious context against the backdrop of the dominant either/or discourse regarding religious diversity - and, for that matter, multiculturalism - in Western society. The conceptual framework of this study is constituted by the debate on essentialism and constructivism in the social sciences. She argues that, under the right circumstances, interreligious dialogue can move beyond polemics and apologetics and prepare the ground for understanding in the dual sense of prejudice reduction and interreligious hermeneutics.

In the fall of 1957 the University of California Press expanded Arnheim's 1933 book "Film" by four essays and brought that landmark work back into print as "Film as Art". Now nearly fifty years after that re-edition, this book continues to occupy an important place in the literature of film. Arnheim's method, provocative in this age of technological wizardry, was to focus on the way art in film was derived from that medium's early limitations: no sound, no color, and no three-dimensional depth. From a master storyteller and former Children's Laureate comes a moving story of a group of musicians who survived the Holocaust using the only weapon they had. The author of the international phenomenon War Horse brings us a moving tale of secrets and survival bound together by the power of music. When Lesley Roots and Routes : Identity Construction and the Jewish-Christian-Muslim Dialogue free pdf is sent to Venice to interview world-renowned violinist Paulo Levi on his fiftieth birthday, she cannot believe her luck. She is told that she can ask him anything at all - except the Mozart question. But it is Paulo himself who decides that the time has come for the truth to be told. And so follows the story of his parents in a Jewish concentration camp, forced to play Mozart violin concerti for the enemy; how they watched fellow Jews being led off to their deaths and knew that they were playing for their lives. As the story unfolds, the journalist begins to understand the full horror of war - and how one group of musicians survived using the only weapon they had.
